An Open System interacts continuously with its environment. Naturally this applies to any environmental system under scrutiny, and at any scale. Earth environments are in constant flux following patterns called a dynamic equilibrium. It is a cosmic balancing act between energy input and energy output. You are what you eat. Humans are interlopers to these systems and as a result can alter their courses. The energy we consume and produce takes from and gives back to the environment in ways to which it has never before needed to adapt. As a civilization we must address this issue. Without profound shifts towards conservationism and sustainable practices we will out pace our environment’s ability to adapt to and accommodate us. In many not so subtle ways it has already fallen behind.
I am Brodie Marrow, a student of environmental science at The University of Maryland. This blog is an effort to connect the dots, practice writing and maintain perspective. It will double as a personal blog focused on scientific ramblings – specifically the Earth-human boundary and our effects (good and bad) on our environment. We are all tied to our surroundings in significant ways. We are born from it, and we feedback into it.
